Market Street closures in effect
Six blocks of Market Street are scheduled to close to westbound traffic this week for installation of underground utilities at the University of Texas Medical Branch. The traffic restrictions will be in effect between Sixth and 12th streets and are expected to last about 14 months. Eastbound traffic lanes and access to driveways along the street—including those leading to John Sealy Hospital and the Ninth Street traffic circle—will not be affected.
Muscle metabolism research
UTMB is recruiting healthy non-smoking volunteers, age 60 to 80, of normal height and weight, for a muscle metabolism study during inactivity. The study involves an 18-day stay at UTMB’s Clinical Research Center, and volunteers will be reimbursed for their time. Summer camp
Registration is now open for the STEM Quest Summer Camp I for students in the seventh and eighth grades in Galveston County and the surrounding area. Campers gain hands-on experience with lab experiments in general biology, chemistry, biomedical and physical sciences, including mock crime scene investigation and robotics. STEM Quest Summer Camp II registration is open for students in grades nine and 10. Some of the activities include gel electrophoresis, microbiology techniques and recombinant DNA technology. Camp counselors needed
Counselors are needed for the STEM Quest Summer Camps for seventh through 10th graders. Counselors should be sophomore, junior or senior undergraduate science (biology, chemistry, physics), math, engineering or education majors. Gastrointestinal cancer support group
The UTMB colorectal and GI cancer support group will host a group discussion on future presentations at their meeting at 5:30 p.m. tonight in room 1.132 of the Rebecca Sealy Building, at the corner of Market and Eighth streets. Caregiver seminar
The UTMB Geriatric Outpatient Clinics offer an educational seminar for caregivers of those with memory loss on March 20 at the Primary Care Pavilion, 400 Harborside Drive, Galveston. The three-hour seminar is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., and participants do not have to be affiliated with UTMB in any way. Pre-registration is required and space is limited. Center for Addiction Research
The Center welcomed T. Celeste Napier, director of the Center for Compulsive Behavior and Addiction at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, who spoke on “Methamphetamine abuse and vulnerability for Parkinson’s disease.”
