Work has begun on a project to demolish an old building that was to the east of the Café on the Court in John Sealy Hospital.

The courtyard, between Old John Sealy, Waverly Smith Pavilion and John Sealy Hospital, has been fenced off and will be closed to the public for the duration of the project, expected to be complete July 31.

STEM Quest Summer Camp I

A free summer science camp for Galveston area students in seventh and eighth grades is now accepting applications.

The camp runs from 8 a.m. to noon from June 6 to July 1 and will give students hands-on lab experience in general biology, chemistry, biomedical and physical sciences such as experiments isolating DNA, catapult and marble machine construction and mock crime scene investigations.

International Education Week

A variety of events highlighting global health were held last week at UTMB. Among them, the screening of a documentary, a photography display and contest, an international panel discussion on practicing in the United States and a keynote lecture by Dr. Ted Schrecker, “Global reach, local depth and new cartographies of population health.”

Donations benefiting the American Red Cross for disaster relief in Japan were accepted at all events.

Visiting Campus

“Structure and regulation of G protein-coupled receptor kinases,” was the topic addressed by John J.G. Tesmer, an associate professor of life sciences and pharmacology at the University of Michigan.

Presentations

“The rocky road from discovery of a novel thrombin receptor agonist to initiation of diabetic foot ulcer and distal radius fracture clinical trials” was presented by Darrell Carney, vice-chair of the department of biochemistry and molecular biology.

“Advances in the management of prostate cancer” was presented by Dr. Bagi R.P. Jana, assistant professor in the division of hematology and oncology.
