September 5, 1957—that was Adeline Smith’s first day as a nurse’s aide on UTMB’s Galveston Campus. She would later transfer to UTMB’s Food and Nutrition Services team. Now, 60 years later, she’s still feeding patients and bringing a smile to everyone she meets—with no immediate retirement plans.
On Oct. 30, representatives from UTMB food service provider Morrison Healthcare and its parent company, Compass Group, held a special reception for the organization’s first employee to reach such a milestone. Jay Niner (pictured left), regional vice president with Morrison, presented Smith with an award recognizing her achievement.
Smith even made a special menu request—fried pork chops, collard greens, black-eyed peas and cornbread—now (unofficially) renamed the “Adeline Special.”
