  • Ordering Viracor Immunknow / Cylex Panel (Referral Testing)

    November 13, 2018, 11:57 AM by Anthony O. Okorodudu, Ph.D.

Effective today, 11/13/2018, the Immuknow assay performed by Viracor Eurofins Laboratory will be available as an orderable assay in EPIC.

Please order this assay as Immuknow or Cylex, and not as a Miscellaneous test.  The specimen collection procedures remain the same, namely collection of 6 ml of blood into a Sodium Heparin (green top) tube, kept at room temperature.

This enhancement will allow for improved reimbursement through pre-authorization, and improve turnaround time reporting into the EMR.

If you have any questions, please contact the Director-on-call for Clinical Chemistry (409-772-3197) or Cindy Lewing in the Sample Management laboratory (409-772-3302).

  • PTT Critical Value Changed to 100 seconds

April 24, 2018, 11:04 AM by Gulshan Sharma, MD, MPH, FCCP

Critical values are intended to represent life-threatening results. According to The Joint Commission’s guidelines, these results must be verbally reported by the laboratory to the ordering physician. One of the critical values used at UTMB is a PTT greater than 70 seconds. This value is easily achieved with therapeutic concentrations of heparin, which results in many unnecessary calls. To help reduce the call volume, the Medical Staff Executive Committee has voted to change the PTT critical value at UTMB from greater than 70 seconds to greater than 100 seconds. Please contact Dr. Michael Laposata, Chair, Department of Pathology, with any questions or concerns.

    Regards,

    Gulshan Sharma, MD, MPH, FCCP
