The continuing threat of another Zika outbreak in South Texas border communities is the subject of this in-depth report from the Texas Observer. While Zika cases have declined public health experts say another outbreak is almost certain. The experts stress that mosquito-borne illnesses on the border tend not to go away. Instead, they re-emerge in waves. According to UTMB’s Pei-Yong Shi, “We can learn from closely related viruses, like dengue and yellow fever, which are carried by the same mosquito at Zika.”
