We're pleased to announce that one of our discoveries was selected to compete in this year’s STAT Madness. STAT is a national publication that covers health, medicine and science discoveries.

The Stat Madness event is set up like the NCAA’s college basketball March Madness. It is an elimination tournament that pairs different teams against each other in brackets.

The study that we have showcased in this competition centers on Multiple Sclerosis. We still don’t know what exactly causes this disease and it can sometimes take years for an MS patient to be properly diagnosed. Our UTMB scientists have learned that when a person carries variants of two particular genes, they may be almost three times more likely to develop MS. This discovery may help pave the way for new tests to identify who has the greatest risk of developing MS, enabling earlier treatment.

Each week, the winners advance from round to round until only one discovery is left remaining.

The team with the most votes in each paring advances to the next round. Each of us has the power to vote for our UTMB research. We need as many people as possible to vote for their favorite UTMB discovery.

We’re very proud of all of our researchers involved in this competition and wish the best of luck! Make sure to vote in support of their achievements!
