Research conducted by UTMB’s Pei-Yong Shi to develop a Zika vaccine finds that it may serve another purpose other than prevent the spread of Zika. Shi’s team managed to successfully harness the vaccine under development to target and kill the brain cancer known as glioblastoma. “These findings represent major progress toward developing the Zika vaccine as a safe and effective virotherapeutic treatment for human glioblastoma,” said Shi. United Press International, Science Daily, KHOU Channel 11, Ciencias Medicas News, Houston Public Media and HealthDay also covered the research findings.
