GALVESTON, Texas - The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston has appointed Dr. Gary D. V. Hankins as its new chairman of obstetrics and gynecology. Hankins served as vice chairman for 11 years before being named interim chairman when Dr. Garland Anderson was appointed UTMB dean of medicine in October 2006.
As chairman, Hankins will lead the renovation and expansion of the university's labor and delivery areas and nurseries and work to establish UTMB as one of the premier obstetrics and gynecology programs in the nation. He will also lead the continued growth and development of the research, clinical and educational initiatives of the department.
"During his tenure at UTMB, Dr. Hankins has displayed an unwavering and singular commitment to his patients, his students and to the department of obstetrics and gynecology," said Dr. Garland Anderson, dean of medicine. "He is recognized nationally for his expertise in critical care obstetrics, and is admired by his patients and students for his compassionate care. Dr. Hankins is quite an asset to this medical school, and I am proud that he will be in a position to raise the profile of women's health at UTMB."
Hankins has been named one of "America's Top Doctors" by Castle Connolly Guide for the past four years.
Hankins, a former colonel in the U.S. Air Force, said he was drawn to UTMB and has remained committed to the institution primarily because of its dedication to and historic mission of serving the underserved. "I have always believed that everyone deserves quality care delivered by good doctors and nurses," he said. "That is why I stayed in the military for 22 years, and that is what attracted me to UTMB."
A native of Tazewell, Va., Hankins earned his bachelor's degree from the Virginia Military Institute and medical degree from the Virginia Commonwealth University's Medical College of Virginia. He completed his residency at the Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. Hankins also completed two fellowship programs - one in critical care medicine at Wilford Hall and the other in maternal-fetal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas.
Since joining the UTMB faculty in 1995, Hankins has written or co-written nine books, 30 book chapters, close to 200 articles and 300 abstracts. He also serves as a consultant to the Air Force Surgeon General for Obstetrics/Gynecology and is the chairman of the OB Practice Committee for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. In addition to serving as vice chairman of the UTMB OB/GYN department, he has been medical director of the university's Perinatal Outreach Program.
Prior to coming to UTMB, Hankins was a faculty member in the Wilford Hall Medical Center's department of obstetrics and gynecology, serving as chairman of the department from 1987 to 1995. He also served as a clinical professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and a professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md.
UTMB's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology offers a full range of obstetric and gynecologic health services for women of all ages. It operates clinics in Galveston and the Women's Health Center at Bay Colony in League City. Department faculty and house staff deliver more than 6,700 babies annually at UTMB. In addition, the department operates a highly successful Regional Maternal and Child Health Program, which provides medically underserved women and children in East and South Texas with high-quality health and nutrition services. In 2006, the program's 31 clinics served nearly 105,000 families from 104 counties. UTMB's Obstetrics and Gynecology Department also is home to the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Women's Health and is ranked fourth in National Institutes of Health funding among its peer departments across the country.
