Galveston County Daily News (Internet / Print) 05/01/06 Statistics sometimes surprise me. Among every 100 of us, some 70 are said to be completely independent individuals needing no assistance in their daily living from anybody but themselves and their spouses. Nursing homes number five of the 100, and 25 need some assistance from someone or somewhere. In Galveston, only 5 percent of seniors have ever set foot inside a senior center provided by the Galveston County Senior Service, according to the senior report card compiled by University of Texas Medical Branch’s Dr. Daniel Freeman. Congress created the Older American Act in 1965 to fund programs to provide, with dignity to those in need, some assistance to live independently in their own environment through the senior centers as community focal points.
