Dr. David L. Callender, president of the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, today announced that Steve Campbell, currently assistant vice president of Marketing and Communications at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, has been appointed UTMB vice president for Marketing and Communications effective Dec. 1.

Campbell is charged with merging UTMB’s Public Affairs and Marketing departments into a cohesive, comprehensive team and establishing a unified strategic direction for UTMB’s marketing, brand management, media relations, internal communications, social media, institutional web, crisis communication and issues management efforts.

“I’m excited to join such a vibrant and growing organization as UTMB and am looking forward to becoming part of the Galveston community,” said Campbell.

In a statement he sent out today to UTMB employees, Callender praised Campbell as a highly collaborative leader with broad-based experience in marketing and public relations, including managing strategic communications for a large, complex health center.

During Campbell’s more than 11 years at Cincinnati Children’s, he developed local and national advertising campaigns that supported significant increases in patient volume; spearheaded marketing and communications efforts to build the hospital’s reputation as a leader in safety and quality; led the complete redesign of the hospital’s website to make it more customer-focused; and ensured integration of messages among marketing, media relations, internal communications, governmental relations and development communications endeavors.

Prior to joining Cincinnati Children’s, Campbell worked at Cap Gemini Ernst and Young. He holds a bachelor’s degree in microbiology from Miami University and a master’s in health and hospital administration from Xavier University.
