Urgent need for blood 
The Blood Bank has a blood shortage and an urgent need for all blood types, especially O-negative and A- negative. Donations can be made at the UTMB Donor Room, 5.212 in the John Sealy Annex Building, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Donations can also be made on Tuesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Multispecialty Center and Stark Diabetes Clinic, 2660 Gulf Freeway S., in League City. UTMB Causeway 5K FunD Run
The School of Health Professions is hosting the SHP Causeway FunD Run/Walk on March 8, in partnership with FitTriRun, to benefit student scholarships. Online preregistration information is available at Early registration — through midnight, Feb. 9 — is $10 for the kids’ run and $25 for the 5K in advance. Beginning Feb. 10, late registration fees will be $20 for the kid’s 1K and $40 for the 5K.The course is certified, and preregistered 5K participants will be chip timed. Spring semester
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, dedicated to providing a welcoming environment for all those 55 or older interested in learning for the fun of it, has begun registration for the spring semester. To register, you must be a member of OLLI. Membership is $25 annually from Sept. 1 through Aug. 31. Tuition for each course is $25 through Feb. 17; then increases to $30. Call 409-763-5604.

Island support group
The UTMB Breast Cancer Support Group for women diagnosed with breast cancer will be from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Galveston Island Community Center, Suite B101, 4700 Broadway. The group helps women at any stage of diagnosis and treatment understand that breast cancer affects them both emotionally and spiritually, not just physically. Volunteers needed for aging research
Researchers at the Sealy Center on Aging and the UTMB Pepper Center are seeking volunteers for a new study that will test if aerobic exercise and nutritional supplementation can reduce muscle loss associated with aging. Volunteers must be 65 to 85 and in overall good health. Regular exams and reimbursement for time and travel will be provided.
