Food and Beverage
Food and beverages are not permitted in the museum.
Water bottles with sealed lids can be brought into the museum and stored in the cubbies near the front door and can only be used at this location
Why?
The museum is housed in a former dissecting laboratory; we firmly believe that the consumption of food and beverage in these spaces is not appropriate due to the presence of historical collections.
Liquids can damage the collections/exhibits and create slip hazards.
Crumbs and residue from food attract pests that pose a threat to wet and dry collections.
There are benches with umbrellas outside Ashbel Smith next to the Lee Hage Jamail Student Center and cafe services in the Health Education Center (HEC) and the John Sealy Hospital with seating areas. Please see the campus map: Interactive Map and Tours at UTMB Health - Patient Care at UTMB Health - UTMB
Bags
Bags are to be placed in the designated cubby area at the front of the museum.
Why?
Prevent any possible damage of collections/exhibits.
Photography
Due to the sensitive nature of the collections at Old Red Medical Museum, personal photography and video are strictly prohibited in the museum. This includes the use of cameras, smartphones, or smart glasses.
Museum personnel retain the right to photograph museum spaces for the express purpose of research and promotion.
Official UTMB photography is allowed on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of museum staff.
Events
We ask that all university events adhere to appropriate university and museum policies.
All requests for events must be submitted through the Event Form, and the requesting parties are required to handle all set up, clean up, and housekeeping costs.
We request that all events relate to/further the mission of the museum. ABOUT THE MUSEUM - Old Red Medical Museum - UTMB

No open flame or Sterno (canned heat) is permitted within the museum due to health and safety concerns, including but not limited to fire.
The collections at the Old Red Medical Museum include historical preparations that are stored in preservation fluids that include flammable liquids including ethanol, isopropanol, turpentine, and formaldehyde.
No displays or exhibits will be moved for events.
