Welcome Students!
The MS3 Surgery Core Clerkship is a eight-week rotation divided into 2 four-week blocks, one focused on general surgery while the other on a surgical sub-specialty. The rotations span multiple campuses that include UT Health Tyler and UTMB Galveston, Clear Lake, Victory Lakes, and Angleton. You will be exposed to multiple patient-care settings such as clinic, the emergency department or trauma bay, and the operating room. With the help of the Sealy
& Smith Laboratory for Surgical Training, Assessment and Research (LSTAR), we are able to teach and enhance your technical skills in basic suturing, knot-tying, and other minor bedside procedures.
The goals of this hands-on clerkship are:
- To introduce you to the capabilities as well as limitations of surgery to help facilitate better patient care and communication with surgeons, no matter what field you eventually choose
- Teach and expose you to basic procedures
- Encourage and support those who are interested in entering any surgical field
We hope that you learn and have fun during this clerkship!
