IHII research and publication highlights for the Division of Surgical Sciences

Dr. Juquan Song was awarded an Institute for Human Infections and Immunity (IHII) Pilot Grant from UTMB for his research project, “Targeting HMGB1 for the Recovery of Synaptic Dysfunction and Cognitive Disorder After Severe Burn Injury.” The IHII Pilot Grant Program supports innovative research initiatives in strategic areas of infectious diseases and immunology, with the goal of advancing emerging research opportunities and strengthening the Institute’s mission and strategic priorities.

Recent publications from our team include “A Twenty-Year Retrospective Cohort Study of Mortality and Morbidities in Adult Trauma Patients with Blunt, Sharp, and Firearm Injuries,” authored by Dr. Michael Erickson, Dr. Steven Wolf, Dr. Juquan Song, and medical students Sophia Rosella Lee and Aaron Wang Lee, published in Medicina. Another study, “Prescription Analysis of Antihistamines' Use in Patients with Moderate to Severe Burns,” by medical students Abbas A Karim, Nizam Karim, Suhaib Shah, Rashid Syed, Zain Akbar, Farhad Marzook, and Drs. Juquan Song, George Golovko, Steven Wolf, and Amina El Ayadi, appeared in the Journal of Burn Care & Research. Additionally, “Vasopressor Use in Acute Burn Resuscitation: A Retrospective Study,” authored by Drs. Kristine Knappskog, Kostiantyn Botnar, Julia Kleinhapl, Juquan Song, Amina El Ayadi, Henning Onarheim, Anne Berit Guttormsen, George Golovko, Steven Wolf, and Stian Kreken Almeland, was published in Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica.
