General Surgery Residency

Surgery Core Clerkship for Medical Students

Welcome Students!

The MS3 Surgery Core Clerkship is a eight-week rotation divided into 2 four-week blocks, one focused on general surgery while the other on a surgical sub-specialty. The rotations span multiple campuses that include UT Health Tyler and UTMB Galveston, Clear Lake, Victory Lakes, and Angleton. You will be exposed to multiple patient-care settings such as clinic, the emergency department or trauma bay, and the operating room. With the help of the Sealy & Smith Laboratory for Surgical Training, Assessment and Research (LSTAR), we are able to teach and enhance your technical skills in basic suturing, knot-tying, and other minor bedside procedures.

The goals of this hands-on clerkship are:

  1. To introduce you to the capabilities as well as limitations of surgery to help facilitate better patient care and communication with surgeons, no matter what field you eventually choose
  2. Teach and expose you to basic procedures
  3. Encourage and support those who are interested in entering any surgical field

We hope that you learn and have fun during this clerkship!
