Many of the world’s leading experts in healthcare, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, policy, venture capital, academia, and industry will gather in Texas next week for a transformative event designed to shape the future of brain health and economic growth.
The Texas Brain Economy Summit, hosted by The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), the Center for Houston’s Future, and Project Metis, will take place June 9-10 at the Texas Medical Center’s Helix Park in Houston.
This high-impact summit will convene more than 400 senior executives, innovators, researchers, investors, entrepreneurs, and policymakers to explore one of the most significant opportunities of our time: building a thriving global brain economy.
Rather than treating brain health solely as a clinical challenge, the summit addresses it as a powerful economic engine encompassing the collective cognitive resilience, mental well-being, and innovation capacity of society.
“We want our faculty, clinicians, and researchers to see the opportunity in the brain health space,” said Vineet Gupta, PhD, vice president of the Office of Innovation and Commercialization at UTMB. “And by that, it means mental health, well-being, new therapeutics — all of the different areas we work in that translate into institutional success and regional leadership.”
Moving past the silos of isolated lab discoveries, attendees will learn how driving these advancements can directly enhance institutional branding and unlock partnership-dependent opportunities across the broader Houston-Galveston life science ecosystem.
A primary focus of the event will be navigating major, fast-approaching changes in state-level research funding. Notably, the summit will explore how institutions can strategically position themselves and align their programs to be competitive for Dementia Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (DPRIT) funding, a voter-approved, multibillion-dollar state mechanism designed to accelerate brain health research and commercialization.
“This is a megaphone for the sheer scale of innovation taking place across UTMB campuses,” Gupta said. “By gathering international stakeholders, industry titans, and policymakers in one room, UTMB is placing its faculty and groundbreaking research directly in front of the people who can fund, scale, and publicize it. This level of exposure redefines the university's reputation, transitioning it from a premier regional healthcare center to a primary driver of the global brain economy.”
Gupta said that while the summit holds immense strategic value for researchers, it’s far from an exclusive academic seminar. He emphasized that the public, community advocates, and business leaders have a stake in the brain economy conversation.
“The public will walk away with a front-row seat to the future of healthcare, learning how emerging AI technologies and novel mental health therapeutics may impact daily life, workplace productivity, and family caregiving,” Gupta said. “For business owners, the summit provides actionable insights into how investing in employee cognitive health and workplace well-being can dramatically improve organizational performance and drive corporate growth.”
The two-day summit is designed to equip attendees with the collaborative networks and strategic insights needed to understand where healthcare is headed. Gupta said takeaways will include insights into targeted funding and growth strategies, cross-sector partnerships, a blueprint for personal and corporate well-being, and commercialization pathways for accelerating neuroscience from laboratory concepts to licensed treatments and accessible healthcare innovations.
