 Frequently Asked Questions.

  • What is rheumatology?
The word “rheumatology” derives from the Greek word “rheuma,” which means “that which flows.” Rheumatology as a medical specialty involves diagnosing and treating conditions that impact the joints, muscles, bones, and immune system. These conditions, commonly referred to as rheumatic diseases, can lead to pain, inflammation, stiffness, and reduced mobility.
  • Why would someone need to see a rheumatologist?
A person may need to see a rheumatologist if they experience joint pain, swelling, stiffness, muscle weakness, or are suspected of having an autoimmune condition. Rheumatologists are experts in diagnosing and treating complex disorders, many of which may not be easily detected through routine tests, who provide ongoing care for chronic illnesses.
  • Is there a cure for rheumatology disorders/diseases?
Unfortunately, most rheumatologic diseases do not have a cure. However, many can be effectively managed with the right treatment. The goal of care is usually to control symptoms, prevent joint damage, maintain physical function and mobility, and improve overall quality of life.
