Goals

Completion of this module helps the student address two of the core goals for the Pediatric Clerkship at the University of Texas Medical Branch:

  • Develop strategies for effective health promotion as well as for disease and injury prevention

  • Foster an understanding of the pediatrician's approach to the health care and overall well being of children and adolescents.

In addition, module completion allows the student to meet seven specific objectives of the Pediatric clerkship:

  1. Develop a basic understanding of the more common principles of pediatric health maintenance.

  2. Discuss common parental concerns at specific ages, including feeding (nutrition) problems.

  3. State calories/kg/day needed for normal growth in infants and small children.

  4. Identify the major differences between human milk and the various commonly available infant formulas.

  5. Describe the advantages of breast feeding and recognize potential common difficulties experienced by breast-feeding mothers.

  6. Recognize factors that contribute to the development of failure to thrive and obesity in childhood

  7. Advise families about the dietary prevention and treatment of common pediatric mineral (e.g. iron, fluoride, calcium) and dietary deficiencies.
