Corrie Ntiforo, MSPH, RBP

Corrie_NtiforoCorrie is a Biosafety Consultant at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston, where her duties include select agent laboratories, high and maximum containment facilities, BSL4 Biosafety Training Program and training of healthcare workers to work in hospital biocontainment units with patients infected with Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID). Corrie is HAZWOPER (40 hour) trained, certified as an IATA Dangerous Goods shipper, and trained in FEMA Incident Response.  She is also a voting member of the UTMB Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and an advisor to the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).  Other job duties include supporting leadership in the development and implementation of programs for biological, chemical, fire, occupational and environmental health and safety.  She assists with local, state and federal agencies to complete inspections or site visits including: JCAHO, CAP, NIH, NETEC, CDC, USDA, HHS, DHH, CDC/USDA/Division of Select Agents, and DOD inspections.

Prior to her arrival at UTMB in 2012, Corrie worked as a Biosafety Specialist at Tulane University’s Primate Research Center (TNPRC) for five years.  She supervised the daily biosafety operations of the TNPRC, and participated in the design review, start-up and operation of the Regional Biosafety Laboratory (RBL).  At the TNPRC she also acted as the Alternate Responsible Official for the Select Agent Program.  

Corrie received her Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst where she studied Chlamydophila pneumoniae and taught undergraduate microbiology laboratory classes.  She received a Masters of Science in Public Health (MSPH) degree in Parasitology/Tropical Medicine from Tulane University School of Tropical Medicine where she studied Schistosoma mansoni and taught graduate protozoology/helminthology laboratory classes and assisted with teaching virology courses.

She is a Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP) through the American Biological Safety Association (ABSA).  She is currently the Chair of the Preconference Course Committee, and a member of the Membership Committee. She is also an active participant in the NBL/RBL Working Group, Southern Biosafety Association.
