The Department of Cardiovascular Medicine offers three distinct fellowship programs, each designed to provide an exceptional educational experience and prepare you for excellence in cardiovascular care. Meet Our Fellows

About Our Program

We have been passionate for fellow education–for the last 130 years. Our first medical school building–"Old Red" was opened for medical education in 1891 immediately after the opening of John Sealy Hospital in 1890. We believe that one of our most important duties is to educate, train, and mentor future cardiologists.

Faculty

Our faculty, consisting of academic cardiologists with outstanding track record in education, clinical care, and research, daily interacts with over 20 fellows on UTMB's enviable 84-acre campus that houses more than 70 buildings.

Outpatient

Outpatient cardiology training occurs in one of our several outpatient clinics on main campus and in our community clinics.
Inpatient

Inpatient training takes place at UTMB Health’s Jennie Sealy Hospital and affiliated community hospitals. Jennie Sealy Hospital features advanced cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology laboratories, as well as an echo lab, heart station, and cardiac rehabilitation facility. Additional training opportunities in Nuclear Cardiology, Cardiac CT Angiography, and Cardiac MRI are also available at Jennie Sealy Hospital.
Research

Research training is offered. Robust basic science research is conducted at the Cardiology Research Laboratory at the Medical Research Building (MRB) while clinical research is conducted at Jennie Sealy Hospital and outpatient clinics, supported by full-time clinical research coordinators.

We have a highly systematic and interactive educational system to develop fellows as competent cardiologists. The appropriate balance between didactic learning and direct patient care is maintained as Sir William Osler said, "He who studies medicine without books sails an uncharted sea, but he who studies medicine without patients does not go to sea at all."
