About the Program
Welcome to the Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology Fellowship Program at the University of Texas Medical Branch. The primary objectives of the Advanced Heart Failure Fellowship are to provide advanced knowledge and expertise in the area of advanced heart failure management, assist devices (both percutaneous and surgical), and the increasing role of AICDs, cardiac resynchronization therapy, and remote monitoring, which are also priorities of the fellowship.
We are a Texas Medical Board (TMB) non-ACGME accredited fellowship. Currently, three (3) fellows are accepted each year for this one-year fellowship at the PGY4 level.
Dr Khaled Chatila completed his medical school at the prestigious American University of Beirut in Lebanon. He then joined as a post-doctoral research fellow in cardiovascular disease at Baylor College of Medicine where he performed cutting edge basic science research studying the pathogenesis of myocardial infarction in animals. He then joined the Good Samaritan Hospital a Johns Hopkins affiliate in Baltimore where he completed his residency training in internal medicine.
Dr Chatila then moved to Louisville Kentucky for his cardiology training and after completion of general cardiology he stayed on for an additional fellowship in advanced heart failure and transplant where he learned under the guidance of world renowned experts in the field about the care and management of patients with end stage heart failure, mechanical heart pumps (LVAD) and heart transplantation. He then joined UTMB division of cardiology. Along with him was his wife Dr Hania Kassem who also joined UTMB division of nephrology.
Dr Chatila is extremely passionate about teaching medical students, residents and Cardiology Fellows. He is also interested in multiple research topics and currently working on different research projects. Dr Chatila has been selected for three years in a row 2016-2018 by Super Doctors® as one of Texas rising stars physicians. Dr Chatila has two kids a son and daughter with whom he spends most of his free time.

Training Overview
The goal of our training program is to train outstanding Advanced Heart Failure fellows who excel in all areas of the six core competencies: (a) patient care, (b) medical knowledge, (c) practice-based learning and improvement, (d) interpersonal and communication skills, (e) professionalism, and (f) systems-based practice. The training program views professionalism as one of the most important attributes of Advanced Heart Failure cardiologists and encourages the fellows to strive for and attain the highest level of professionalism that lasts a lifetime.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities of Advanced Heart Failure fellows include the evaluation and care of all patients referred for heart failure management. The program will provide sufficient experience for the fellows to acquire skill and proficiency in the performance and interpretation of history and physical examinations, basic and advanced cardiac life support, right heart catheterization, endomyocardial biopsies, percutaneous assist devices such as IABP (intra-aortic balloon pump), Impella assist device, or others such as percutaneous ECMO, surgical assist devices (HeartMate II, HeartWare, and HeartMate III), heart transplant, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, and evaluation and interpretation of ICDs and CRTs. Other areas also included are remote monitoring management, nuclear imaging (myocardial viability studies and perfusion images), and echocardiography.
Fellows will be expected to actively participate in meaningful research and are highly encouraged to complete a project suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
