The 11th International Filovirus Symposium was held 13–16 September 2026 at the Emory Conference Center in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, bringing together members of the international filovirus community for four days of scientific exchange, collaboration, and connection.
This year’s gathering was especially meaningful as it marked 50 years since the discovery of Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The anniversary provided an important opportunity to reflect on the remarkable progress made in filovirus research over the past five decades—from our growing understanding of filovirus biology and pathogenesis to advances in diagnostics, vaccines, therapeutics, and outbreak preparedness—while also recognizing the challenges that remain.
The International Filovirus Symposium has always been more than a scientific meeting. It is a community built on collaboration, shared purpose, and a commitment to understanding and counteracting some of the world’s most consequential viral threats. The 11th Symposium continued that tradition, bringing together colleagues from across disciplines and around the world to share new discoveries, exchange ideas, strengthen collaborations, reconnect with friends and colleagues, and welcome new voices to the field.
We were delighted to gather in Atlanta, a city with strong ties to public health, infectious disease research, and global health collaboration. The symposium was a memorable celebration of the field’s history and accomplishments, as well as an opportunity to look ahead to the work that remains.
