CEHD co-hosted the screening of RESILIENCE: THE BIOLOGY OF STRESS AND THE SCIENCE OF HOPE on June 28th, 2017 at Rosenberg Library. 110 people attended the film screening.

Students, faculty, doctors, nurses and other members of the health care community attended the event where researchers presented the culmination of their yearlong research endeavors. Funded through a grant from the Texas Medical Center (TMC) Health Policy Institute, this research report uncovers government policies, agency practices and environmental factors associated with the health of child migrants fleeing violence from Central America and Mexico and their ability to receive adequate healthcare in the United States. A cross-disciplinary research team from four TMC institutions (University of Texas Medical Branch, Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children’s Hospital, and University of Houston Clearlake) produced this report.

CEHD was proud to take part in the first CHAMP (Child Health Acceleration through Multi-site Planning) meeting on January 24, 2016 at the University of California – Irvine. Our team is studying, among other issues, how the income inequality of parents can adversely affect the health of their children.

Seafarers are people who live and work at sea. They contribute to the majority of global trade via the shipping industry, yet are an understudied population. Their transient lives make them easily forgotten, as they often spend no more than a couple of days at each port they visit. A focus on seafarers in public and global health policies is vital, especially with the imbalance between documenting land travel and migrant health versus sea travel and migrant health.

The Symposium showcases the work that our students do during their international electives and to continue a campus-wide discussion about how to engage trainees more effectively in international work. This year's theme is "Training and Reciprocity in Global Health Education." This event creates an opportunity to expand existing partnerships and create new ones.

This week's Health Policy Dialogue is, "The Role of the Academic Medical Center in Attaining the United Nations' 2010 Sustainable Development Agenda." Please join us in welcoming Marcelo Korc, PhD, MPH; Advisor, Pan American Health Organization for Sustainable Development and Health Security, for a UTMB Health Policy Dialogue and Lunch, Wednesday, October 5, at noon. The free lecture is open to all UTMB students, faculty and staff, as well as those interested members of the public.

This conference will help diverse medical students and residents become aware of academic medicine as a career option and to provide them with the resources to further explore and potentially embark on an academic medicine career. This conference will take place on July 16th (Saturday) in the Jennie Sealy Hospital Education Center.

CEHD Staff gave four presentations at this year's annual Texas Public Health Association Conference in Galveston Texas, our home town, at the San Luis Resort. This year's conference theme was Public Health: Every Day, Every One, Every Where. The conference itself lasted from April 11th to the 13th, but all of the following presentations were given on Tuesday, April 12th.

As part of UTMB's transition to the new Sitefinity platform, the Center to Eliminate Health Disparities is updating their website. Our goals are to increase ease of navigation, update existing content, publish new content, and begin to more actively utilize the website in our daily activities.

UTMB's Center to Eliminate Health Disparities (CEHD) just completed their bi-annual report for two Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP) projects. The reports were created by the CEHD, reviewed and submitted by UTMB's 1115 Anchor Office, and will be graded by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) on behalf of the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS).
