CREATE-NEO: Betânia Drumond

Betânia Drumond, PhD
Assistant Professor of Microbiology
Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil

Betânia Paiva Drumond is a tenured Assistant Professor in Microbiology at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG). She completed her MSc and PhD in microbiology and virology at UFMG and postdoctoral studies in genomics at Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (FIOCRUZ). Dr. Drumond’s major research interests are arboviral surveillance, molecular and biological characterization, viral evolution, and dynamics. Following the 2016-18 yellow fever outbreak in Brazil, she has worked closely with other investigators to identify the origin, ecology, and dynamics of yellow fever transmission, as well as disease course in humans. Dr. Dumond also mentors graduate students, teaches undergraduate and graduate-level virology and microbiology courses, and leads research projects at UFMG. She serves as co-PI for CREATE-NEO's work with UFMG, along with Dr. Mauro Teixeira.

The Centers for Research in Emerging Infectious Disease (CREID) is a coordinated network with centers in regions around the globe where emerging and re-emerging infectious disease outbreaks are likely to occur. Multidisciplinary teams of investigators will conduct pathogen/host surveillance, study pathogen transmission, pathogenesis and immunologic responses in the host, and will develop reagents and diagnostic assays for improved detection for important emerging pathogens and their vectors.

NIAID launched the CREID Network in 2020.This website is run by CREATE-NEO, a member of the CREID Network independent of NIH/NIAID.
