UTMB Health has a Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS) Program that offers a multidisciplinary approach to the care of patients with obesity. Since 2020, Dr. Sarah Samreen, the MBS Medical Director, has completed 300 bariatric procedures, and there are currently over 140 patients pursuing bariatric surgery to treat obesity at UTMB. The program will add providers in the next fiscal year and expand on the bariatric procedures offered.
As the program grows and strives to provide high-quality care to bariatric patients, the Health System seeks accreditation for the Galveston Campus, where bariatric surgeries are performed, to be an Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) Center of Excellence. This accreditation requires compliance of standards of care for bariatric patients. Therefore, if you are an employee who encounters patients with obesity or patients who have had bariatric surgery, you will find up to three additional training modules have been assigned to your annual online training for FY24.
