Dr. Lynn Warthan is a native Texan. He grew up on a farm in the rural community of Avery, Texas, with a population of about 300, in Red River County.
He attended the University of Texas in Austin and graduated with honors in 1967, with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. He was inducted into Ro Chi, an Honor Society for Pharmacy majors. He currently serves as a member of the Chancellor’s Council Executive Committee at the university.
Dr. Warthan graduated from The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) John Sealy School of Medicine in 1971. While at UTMB, he was a member of the Phi Chi medical fraternity. Following graduation, he completed a rotating internship at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin.
He then completed a residency in dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania, where he served as chief resident. He then moved to Nacogdoches, Texas, in 1975, and opened his dermatology practice; with over 50 years of dermatology practice behind him, he still sees patients on a part-time basis.
Dr. Warthan’s roots run deep at UTMB. His wife, Jackie, is a 1972 graduate of the UTMB School of Allied Health Professions, with a degree in medical technology. He is proud to say that his two daughters, Mandy and Molly, are practicing dermatologists and both are UTMB John Sealy School of Medicine graduates. All of his family are lifetime members of their respective Alumni Associations at UTMB.
Dr. Warthan has always been extremely engaged with UTMB. He is a founding member of the President’s Cabinet and is a member of the Sealy Society. He has served on the UTMB Development Board since the 1990’s, including terms as vice-chair and chair.
He has been active in the last two fundraising campaigns, serving on the Steering Committee, under Dr. Jack Stobo and Dr. David Callendar, respectively. In addition to many personal gifts to UTMB, he was instrumental in facilitating millions of dollars in gifts for the campaigns from foundations in East Texas.
He also is a life member and a past president of the UTMB John Sealy School of Medicine Alumni Association and continues to serve as an ex-officio member.
Over the years, he has mentored countless pre-medical students, as well as serving as a preceptor for both UTMB medical students and students from other medical schools.
Dr. Warthan credits UTMB with his success in his chosen profession, for which he will ever be appreciative.
Dr. Warthan is deeply honored and humbled to be a recipient of the Ashbel Smith Distinguished Alumni Award, and is grateful to the John Sealy School of Medicine Alumni Association for this special recognition.
