Summer school at Victory Lakes

The UTMB Center for Tropical Diseases was established in 1994 and is recognized for excellence in research. The center’s mission is to alleviate suffering caused by tropical diseases through research, education and service. 

Professionalism summit  
“A complementary approach to promoting professionalism: Identifying, measuring and addressing unprofessional behaviors” was the topic of keynote speaker Dr. Gerald Hickson, director of the Center for Patient and Professional Advocacy at Vanderbilt University Medical School.
 
Sealy Center on Aging  
“A preliminary analysis of disablement in Mexican-American women” was the topic of a special lecture by Tracie C. Harrison, associate professor in the School of Nursing at UT Austin.
 
Visiting campus  
John Furness, professor of anatomy and cell biology at the University of Melbourne, Australia, presented “Stem cell therapies for neuropathies” at the invitation of the UTMB Department of Internal Medicine and the Institute for Translational Sciences.
 
“Alertness management and fatigue mitigation” was the topic of Dr. Sajid Haque, assistant professor in the
Department of Critical Care at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

UTMB’s Mitchell Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases hosted Stanislav L. Karsten, assistant professor of neurology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and chief of neuroscience for the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
 
Presentations
“Clinically applied wound care” was the topic of a grand rounds presentation by UTMB’s Dr. Linda Phillips, professor and chief of plastic surgery.
 
Dr. Rong Fang, assistant professor in UTMB’s Department of Pathology, addressed the “Role of NK cells in host resistance to intracellular bacteria” a presentation of 2011 UTMB immunology research in progress.
 
Nursing ethics seminar
“Prolonging life or respecting autonomy: The ethical dilemmas in caring for the chronically, critically ill patient with DNR orders” was presented by UTMB nurses Kiawana Jones and Yetunde Ogunnaike.
