UTMB's Department of Rehabilitation Services celebrated National OT Month in April. The department held its annual OT Month breakfast and recognized outstanding occupational therapists as part of the festivities.

Jocelyn Piro-Wilson was named the recipient of the Rosa Lee Torres Award, which was created in memory of Rosa Lee Torres, a highly regarded colleague who was best remembered for her enthusiasm for occupational therapy as a profession, her dedicated clinical service, quality patient care, respect and collaboration with her colleagues, as well as her cheerful and optmistic attitude toward all. Piro-Wilson was selected by her colleagues as an individual who excels in her profession and exemplifies the mission, vision and values of UTMB Health. Award nominees also included Emily Skinner, Veronica Davis and Diane Ugartechea.

Occupational therapists play a vitally important role in helping people across their lifespan participate in the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of everyday activities. Their holistic and customized approach to evaluations, interventions and outcomes help a child with disabilities participate in school and in social situations, assist a person recovering from injuries to regain skills, aid an older adult to stay as independent as possible, and offer the specialized support and services of all ages and in all circumstances that only occupational therapy can provide.

Thank you, occupational therapists, for all that you do!
