Cardiovascular Medicine

Fellowship Overview

Dear Prospective Fellows:

Welcome to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, our Cardiology Division has three distinct cardiology fellowship programs - General Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology and Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology, directed by Drs. Wissam Khalife, Umamahesh Rangasetty and Khaled Chatila, respectively. These three programs provide our fellows with outstanding educational experience. We plan to add a Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship Program in the upcoming years.

We have been passionate for fellow education–for the last 130 years. Our first medical school building–"Old Red" was opened for medical education in 1891 immediately after the opening of John Sealy Hospital in 1890. We believe that one of our most important duties is to educate, train, and mentor future cardiologists.

Our faculty, consisting of 20 academic cardiologists with outstanding track record in education, clinical care, and research, daily interacts with over 20 fellows on UTMB's enviable 84-acre campus that houses more than 70 buildings.

Our outpatient cardiology training occurs in one of our several outpatient clinics on main campus and in our outreach clinics. Our inpatient training is conducted in Jennie Sealy Hospital, Jennie Sealy Hospital of UTMB Health and in affiliated hospitals in the community. The Jennie Sealy Hospital houses the state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology laboratories, as well as echo lab, heart station, and cardiac rehabilitation facility. Training in Nuclear Cardiology, Cardiac CT Angiography, and Cardiac MRI is also available at Jennie Sealy Hospital. Research training is offered. Robust basic science research is conducted at the Cardiology Research Laboratory at the Medical Research Building (MRB) while clinical research is conducted at Jennie Sealy Hospital and outpatient clinics, supported by full-time clinical research coordinators. As is shown in our Daily Activities, we have a highly systematic and interactive educational system to develop fellows as competent cardiologists. The appropriate balance between didactic learning and direct patient care is maintained as Sir William Osler said, "He who studies medicine without books sails an uncharted sea, but he who studies medicine without patients does not go to sea at all."

We invite you to learn more about us through the web site. We hope that you will eventually decide to join us to learn, be mentored, professionally grow, and prepare yourself for the exciting future as competent cardiologists.
