It seemed that we had just heard about the release of ChatGPT and now people are using it to solve all sorts of problems, from writing essays and computer code.
ChatGPT is a highly trained artificial intelligence or AI tool or bot which uses huge amounts of information to answer questions.
Microsoft has already incorporated the bot into its search engine Bing. And now, ChatGPT has been tested to diagnose illnesses.
Success was defined as getting the correct diagnosis in the top three possibilities. ChatGPT could do this correctly eighty-seven percent of the time.
Surprisingly, doctors aren't any better! Their accuracy rate is about the same. ChatGPT also was good at giving triage recommendations in two thirds of the cases. That's remarkable given a relatively small pool of clinical data for the bot to access and because there's a big variety of clinical situations.
With AI, the more "experience" the chatbot has with clinical cases, the more accurate its predicted diagnoses will become. Still, even in this developmental state of the chatbot, its accuracy was remarkable.
Given that up to 15 percent of physician diagnoses are not completely accurate, AI could help a physician expand their diagnosis possibilities or even reduce diagnostic errors.
Clearly, this is the subject of extensive research and commercial development. Expect to hear more of AI-assisted diagnosis. Dr. Bot could be in your future!
