Goals
To provide students with a focused two-week introduction to Interventional Radiology through supervised participation in patient evaluation, imaging review, procedural observation and assistance, and peri-procedural patient care.

Objectives
1. Describe the basic indications and contraindications for common Interventional Radiology procedures encountered during the rotation.
2. Review relevant imaging studies with the IR team and identify basic considerations involved in planning image-guided interventions.
3. Participate in the evaluation and management of patients before and after Interventional Radiology procedures.
4. Observe and, when appropriate, assist with selected procedures under the direct supervision of IR faculty, residents, or fellows.

Description of course activities
This two-week, clinically oriented elective provides students with focused exposure to Interventional Radiology. Students participate with the IR team in morning rounds, imaging review, pre- and post-procedure discussions, and supervised patient care in inpatient and outpatient settings. Depending on the clinical schedule and the student’s level of preparation, students may observe or assist with selected image-guided procedures.

This two-week elective emphasizes direct clinical participation with the Interventional Radiology service. Students join morning rounds, review relevant imaging, participate in case discussions and peri-procedural patient assessment, and observe or assist with selected procedures under supervision. The abbreviated experience focuses on foundational IR workflow, common procedures, and patient-care principles.

Type of students who would benefit from the course
This elective has been popular with students considering a career in Radiology, but that is not a prerequisite. It is useful for students planning to enter
a procedurally oriented specialty such as ICU medicine, surgery, cardiology, or GI endoscopy.

  What expectations do you have for the student to demonstrate participation in the elective (e.g. small group activities, seminars, thoughtful questions, providing resources, journal club, resident lecture attendance)?
    Students are encouraged to attend departmental didactic and multidisciplinary lectures, along with the IR morning lecture every Tuesday at 7:00 AM. Students are required to present a PowerPoint presentation to faculty and residents at the end of the elective.

Year-4 students should demonstrate mastery of EPAs they developed in the clerkship year, including recommending and interpreting common diagnostic and screening tests, and performing general procedures of a physician. They should be able to demonstrate masterfully and independently skills they mastered in Years 2-3, including efficiently performing comprehensive admission-notes and succinct daily progress notes and perform accurate, concise, and hypothesis-driven clinical presentations, form clinical questions and retrieve evidence to advance patient care. They should be able to demonstrate basic understanding of and beginning mastery of collaborate as a member of the interprofessional team and identify system failures and contribute to a culture of safety improvement.

An AI should have expectation of a minimum of 32 hours per week of clinical responsibilities. Duty hours should be capped at ACGME limits for an intern, thus up to 24 hours followed by 4 hours of activities related to patient safety, education, and handoff. Students cannot work more than 80 hours per week averaged over 4 weeks. They can only have 1 day off in a 7-day work week with 8 hours off between shifts.
