USING SOMEONE ELSE'S VIDEO

Finding Videos

Have you ever wanted to learn how to plant a bulb in a container or build a compost bin? The how-to-video you want, probably already exists.

So how can you find the perfect video to explain how to build a raised garden, install Movie Maker, or learn the steps to the latest dance craze? You can always start with a search engine (e.g. Google or Bing), as these will look at several different sites to help you find what you are looking for. If that does not work, move directly to your favorite video sharing website, like YouTube and search within that website.

Google or Bing

Generic Web Search Engines like Google or Bing use the keywords related to your interests. Very often, you will see these search engines embedded onto home pages. The popularity and tags associated with these sites help certain pages to rise to the top of your search results (also known as hits.) The search results may consist of a variety of pages, blogs, videos or images.

For example, if you want to find videos about Adobe Presenter, you might go to the Google or Bing search engine and try "Adobe Presenter videos" as keywords in the search box, and you would find several videos to start watching.

YouTube Searches

You can search YouTube in the exact same fashion you do Google or Bing. You can also take a little more control.

For example, once you find a video style you like, by a certain author, you can use those videos to find more:

Try it

Go to YouTube , in the search box type "Michael Wesch Machine Control Us".

Your results should bring his most recent entry close to, if not, to the top of your results. Each video is associated with some information. You can see how long each video will play. The first one below is 33:44, the second is 4:31. You see the name of the video and a little information about it. The last line of the description shows the star ranking, when it was posted, how many views it has had and who posted it. If you have time, check out some of Dr. Wesch's videos; they are very thought provoking. Your results should look something like this.

When you click on one of Dr. Wesch's videos, it will start to play. Look at the right side of your screen for "More From: mwesch" and "Related Videos" these videos are similar to or relate to the one you are currently watching.

Check out the channel of the mwesch or someone else; they may have other videos or favorites that are similar.

Dr. Michael Wesch is a beloved YouTube star. On his YouTube channel, he describes his videos as,

"My videos explore mediated culture, seeking to merge the ideas of Media Ecology and Cultural Anthropology. Currently we are analyzing anonymity and pseudonymity on YouTube, throughout the web, and in the "real world" throughout all times and all places. You can check our progress at http://mediatedcultures.net/ About Me: Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology, Kansas State University "

If that does not interest you, click on the "Videos" tab and start browsing by the categories you are interested in.

Favorites

When you find a video you like, click on Favorites and YouTube will keep track of them for you.

Advanced Options

Finally, if these YouTube Search tips don't bring you the results you are hoping for, you can go to the Advanced Search Option in the upper right corner of the search results screen. Here you can enter more specific information about the type of videos you want. Pay attention to the number of video's that meet your criteria.
