Dr. Michele Carter joined the Office of the Provost in 2022 as Faculty Ombudsperson for the Academic Enterprise. In this role she helps faculty members and faculty leadership address areas of concern or conflict and serves as a resource for fair processes.

She also holds the position of Professor Emeritus, having worked at UTMB for the Institute for the Medical Humanities (now the Institute for Bioethics and Health Humanities) since 1973. As a PhD-trained philosopher, her primary roles were in teaching clinical and research ethics to medical, nursing and graduate students and serving as an Ethicist in UTMB’s Institutional Ethics Program and the Institute of Translational Sciences. She was named a Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Academy of Master Teachers in 2009.

Prior to her career at UTMB, Dr. Carter earned baccalaureate and master’s degrees in nursing and held positions in cancer nursing and hospice care in Hawaii, California, Tennessee, and Washington, DC.

She is currently interested in learning about integrating Eastern and Western approaches to health and healing, reading great books and enjoying island life in Galveston.
