Antarctica ROTATION(R4/PGY5 only)
The Antarctica rotation is once a year. it is a 4-week elective that is done in conjunction with the UTMB Center for Polar Medical Operations. The UTMB radiology department interprets radiographs and ultrasounds performed in Antarctica throughout the year. The ultrasounds during the year are often performed by healthcare workers not formally trained in ultrasound. There is a sharp increase in the ultrasounds needed during the months of January-February as contractors/employees wishing to stay in Antarctica during the winter months all need screening right upper quadrant ultrasounds to evaluate for gallstones. After a discussion with the Center for Polar Operations, it was decided that having a radiologist in Antarctica to perform these studies would be most effective for quality, efficiency, and patient care.
The resident must be a PGY-5 that has passed their boards and in good standing. If more than one resident is interested, the resident is chosen by faculty based on ultrasound skills and professionalism.
The resident chosen must go through the Center for Polar Operations to complete their required screening and paperwork. All expenses, including travel, are paid by the Center for Polar Operations. The resident stays on McMurdo Station in Antarctica and meals are provided.
During the rotation, the resident performs and interprets approximately 80 or more ultrasounds. The resident completes a preliminary report which is finalized within 24 hours by a faculty at UTMB. Faculty is also available by email or phone to assist the resident. If needed images can be viewed in real-time with the resident via satellite. Residents also assist in other activities while at the station including education of staff on radiology equipment and image acquisition as needed.
