UTMB Sealy Center on Aging Successfully Completes Dementia Care Study

Aug 3, 2023, 10:49 AM by SCOA

Galveston, TX - In a groundbreaking effort, the UTMB Sealy Center on Aging has achieved a significant milestone in the field of dementia care research by successfully enrolling almost 500 patients with dementia and their family caregivers in the Dementia Care Study, Supporting Individuals and Caregivers (D-CARE). This momentous clinical trial, under the direction of Dr. David Reuben at UCLA and Dr. Elena Volpi at UTMB, included over 2,000 people with dementia and their caregivers at four sites across the United States. D-CARE sought to compare the effectiveness of two dementia care interventions versus regular care. This study is recognized as the largest of its kind, aiming to revolutionize dementia care and support services.

The D-CARE study started in 2019 and ended on July 31, 2023. Thank you to all the people who participated in the 18-month-long study and were willing to share their experiences along the way. Special thanks to the Alzheimer’s Association Houston and SE Texas chapter for their community partnership.
