UNAPP Antiviral Drug Discovery Symposium

In 2022, the UTMB-Novartis Alliance for Pandemic Preparedness (UNAPP) was awarded 1 of 9 NIAID Antiviral Drug Discovery (AViDD) Center grants. The UNAPP combines world-leading virology and BSL3/4 capabilities at UTMB and state-of-the-art drug discovery technologies at Novartis to deliver high quality antiviral drug candidates in preparation for the next pandemic. Additionally, AViDD centers are tasked with training the next generation of drug discovery researchers.

With this in mind, the UNAPP is collaborating with the Sealy Institute for Drug Discovery to offer this Antiviral Drug Discovery symposium which will provide an inside look into how our UNAPP partnership operates, our research progress to date, and how trainees can prepare to contribute in this new environment. The program will mix research talks with panels focused specifically on academic/industry partnerships and career development. The symposium will involve scientists from UTMB, Novartis BioMedical Research, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and NIAID’s Office of Biodefense Research Resources and Translational Research.

Presentations and panel discussions include:

  • How an academic/industry alliance works
  • If you build it…We can screen
  • HTS – How to find a needle in a haystack
  • Quality matters in chemical library design and data analysis
  • Interactive research – Structure function guided flavivirus NS4B projects
  • Panel: Perspectives on drug discovery and pandemic preparedness
  • Panel: Research and training trajectories for drug discovery researchers

Learn about how drug development happens and talk with people from diverse fields about science, collaboration, and careers. UTMB’s Sealy Institute for Drug Discovery will provide lunch for those who register. Register now by emailing utmbidd@utmb.edu by 10/19/23.
