Pediatric Surgery, PGY-1 & 2 Residents

PEDIATRIC SURGERY – PGY 1 & 2 Resident Goals & Objectives 

A. Patient care: 
First- and second-year surgical residents on the pediatric surgery service should demonstrate the ability to: 
1. Manage the fluid, electrolyte, and nutritional aspects of the neonatal and pediatric patient 
2. Initiate the evaluation of pediatric patients with common surgical diseases including:
a.  Malrotation
b. Gastroesophageal reflux disease
c. Appendicitis
d. Intussusception 
e. Pyloric stenosis
f. Hirschsprung’s disease
g. Imperforate Anus
h. Inguinal hernia
i. Abdominal Wall Defects
j. Umbilical hernia
3. Perform the following procedures: 
a. Placement of central venous access devices in the pediatric patient 
b. Inguinal and umbilical hernia repair in the pediatric patient 
c. Laparoscopic Appendectomy 

B. Medical Knowledge 
First-year surgical residents on the pediatric surgery service should understand: 
1. The fluid, electrolyte, and nutritional aspects of the neonatal and pediatric patient 
2. The pathophysiology, method of evaluation, and management of common pediatric surgical diseases including: malrotation, intussusception, pyloric stenosis, abdominal wall defects, Hirschsprung’s disease, tumors (neuroblastoma, Wilms’ tumor) 
3. Indications + contraindications for central venous access 

C. Practice-Based Learning and Improvement 
Goal: The resident will investigate and evaluate his or her own patient care practices, appraise and assimilate scientific evidence, and improve patient care practices.
Objectives: The resident should be able to… 
1. Routinely analyzes the effectiveness of own practices and accepts feedback on performance from senior residents and faculty. 
2. Improves patient care practices via the integration of appropriately gathered data and feedback. 
3. Develop organizational and teaching skills required in basic management of a surgical service
4. Educate junior residents, medical students, and other healthcare professionals in the early management, resuscitation, and the complications/risks associated with burn injury. 
5. Educate medical students and other healthcare professionals on the significance of infectious precautions in the burn unit and teach techniques used in infection control.
6. Reviews patient clinical status including laboratory and radiologic studies with junior residents and medical students for teaching purposes.
7. Understand principles of clinical research and application of biostatistics.
8. Exhibits an interest in and actively seeks scientific literature/data to support current practices in trauma surgery.
9. Presents patient complications and deaths at weekly morbidity and mortality conferences. 

 

D. Interpersonal and Communication Skills 
First- and second-year surgical residents on the pediatric surgery service will demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in effective information exchange with patients, their families, and professional associates. 
1. Be an effective listener, execute closed-loop communication  
2. Demonstrate compassion for patients + families 
3. Communicate patient-related issues in a timely fashion to supervising resident /attending 
4. Document progress notes, procedure notes, and consult forms in the medical record 
5. Participate in efficient + comprehensive daily sign-ins/outs with the relevant services 

E. Professionalism 
First- and second-year surgical residents on the pediatric surgery service will demonstrate a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities, adherence to ethical principles + practices, and sensitivity to a diverse patient population. 
1. Safeguard the welfare of all patients 
2. Abide by established ethical + moral principles 
3. Respect all patients, their families, all healthcare personnel, and support services 
4. Maintain patient confidentiality at all times 
5. Demonstrate sensitivity to our patient’s cultural, spiritual, and personal beliefs 
6. Be accountable for your personal actions + conduct within the medical center
