I earned my M.D. in 1993 and worked as a clinical forensic examiner in China for seven years before transitioning to burn and trauma research in 2000. In 2010, I completed NIH T32 fellowship training in burn and trauma research at Shriners Hospitals for Children and the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, TX. Following my fellowship, I joined the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio as faculty and later moved to UT Southwestern Medical Center in 2012. In 2018, I returned to the Department of Surgery at UTMB.

My research broadly focuses on understanding the mechanisms underlying metabolic and pathophysiological changes after severe burn and trauma, with the long-term goal of developing effective therapeutic strategies for these critical clinical challenges. More specifically, my current interests include: 1) mechanisms of post-burn muscle wasting and atrophy associated with unavoidable immobilization; 2) targeting HMGB1 as a potential therapeutic approach to mitigate post-burn progression; and 3) developing translational models to address diverse clinical concerns. Drawing on my experience and skills, I also enjoy collaborating with faculty colleagues to mentor medical students and support the development of their research interests in surgical trauma.
