Marc R. Moon, MD, presented at the UTMB Department of Surgery Vincent Conti Lectureship on Wednesday, June 15, 2022. His presentation was titled “Diversity, Professionalism, and the Training of a Surgeon”

About the speaker:
Marc R. Moon, MD graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a Bachelor of Science degree in computer sciences from the University of Michigan and a medical degree from Wayne State University. Dr. Moon completed his residency in general surgery at
the Medical College of Wisconsin, which included a period of training in vascular surgery at Oxford University in England and two years in the Cardiovascular Physiology Laboratory at Stanford University with Dr. D. Craig Miller. He completed
his cardiothoracic surgery training at Stanford University in 1998.
Dr. Moon then joined the faculty at Washington University School of Medicine and was promoted to associate professor in 2002, professor of surgery in 2005, Joseph C. Bancroft Professor of Surgery in 2008, and in July 2014, he was honored as the John M.
Shoenberg Chair in Cardiovascular Disease. Dr. Moon served as Director of the Center for Diseases of the Thoracic Aorta, Program Director for the Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program, and Chief of Cardiac Surgery.
Most recently, Dr. Moon joined the faculty at Baylor College of Medicine and now serves as the Chief of Adult Cardiac Surgery at the Texas Heart Institute, Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, and Chief of Adult
Cardiac Surgery at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center. Dr. Moon is also the Program Director for the Thoracic Surgery Residency program at both Baylor and the Texas Heart Institute.
Dr. Moon has authored more than 230 scientific publications and received NIH/NHLBI research funding for nearly two decades. Dr. Moon has given more than 240 invited lectures around the world. Dr. Moon is the Immediate Past President of the American
Association for Thoracic Surgery, the world’s oldest and most prestigious society dedicated to thoracic disease and is a consultant to the Circulatory System Devices Panel of the Food and Drug Administration.
