The UTMB Health Clinical Experiences offer aspiring healthcare professionals a comprehensive and meaningful experience within a dynamic, forward-thinking Academic Health System. Observerships and Shadowings

The observership and shadowing experiences offered by UTMB Health provide invaluable opportunities for students and aspiring healthcare professionals to gain insight into the workings of a complex Academic Health System. These programs are designed for current undergraduate and graduate students who are passionate about healthcare and are looking to deepen their understanding of the field. Participants in these experiences will have the chance to observe and engage with professionals in a dynamic medical environment. These experiences will give the participants a chance to explore a multifaceted healthcare market and to witness first-hand the challenges and innovations within the industry.

Externships & Practicums

UTMB Health offers various clinical externship programs designed to provide healthcare students with practical, supervised experience in real-world clinical settings, bridging the gap between theoretical learning and professional practice. These programs allow students to apply their knowledge, gain valuable skills, and explore various aspects of the healthcare field under the guidance of experienced professionals. 

UTMB Health's Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) and (PA) practicum programs offer students supervised clinical experiences to bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional practice. These programs allow students to apply their knowledge, acquire valuable skills, and explore diverse facets of the healthcare field under the guidance of experienced professionals. 

  • APRN Practicum integrates specialized knowledge into advanced nursing practice, fostering critical thinking, and promoting evidence-based care delivery.
  • PA Practicum is a supervised, hands-on learning experience within a healthcare setting where Physician Assistant (PA) students apply the knowledge and skills they've gained during their didactic coursework.

Surgical Proctoring & Operating Room (OR) Visits

Surgical Proctoring:

A qualified and experienced surgeon who observes and evaluates another surgeon's performance during a procedure, typically as part of the credentialing or privileging process. A proctor's primary function is to observe a surgeon performing a procedure and provide an objective assessment. 

OR Visitor:

An individual, typically a student or scholar, who is granted temporary access to the operating room (OR) environment to observe and learn about surgical procedures and the perioperative care process.
