UTMB Pathway Experiences

Discover your future in health care through UTMB's immersive pathway

Internships   Mentorships  Academic Enrichments

UTMB Health's Pathways Programs offer a range of opportunities designed to prepare individuals for careers in healthcare and biomedical research. These programs cater to various levels of experience and career interests, including those in medical, nursing, health professions, and graduate biomedical sciences.

Internships

UTMB offers internships, such as the Summer Internship Program, for undergraduate and graduate students interested in healthcare. These provide hands-on experience within a complex academic health system and help students build skills for successful careers. The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences also supports and encourages students to pursue internships, including those at pharmaceutical companies and government agencies. Many internships at UTMB are unpaid, but students can receive course credit and host departments cover parking expenses.

Mentoring programs are integral to UTMB's approach to career development. For instance, the Internal Medicine Residency Program assigns senior resident mentors to first-year residents, providing support for career development and transitioning into the UTMB and Galveston community. Formal mentorship occurs throughout residency with program faculty mentors offering performance reviews and career guidance. Additionally, the BSN Honors Program Health Advocacy Track offers mentorship and shadowing experiences for students interested in advocating for at-risk populations and mitigating health disparities. UTMB also offers the Teaching Excellence And Mentorship (TEAM) program, which supports early-career faculty members (Instructors and Assistant Professors) in their growth as educators by providing mentorship and professional development opportunities.
