Walkway Traffic Rerouted between John Sealy Hospital and Annex – Nov. 12

Posted Monday, November 12, 2012

Pedestrian traffic between John Sealy Hospital and the John Sealy Annex has been restricted due to the ongoing concourse project in the area, the Building Operations and Facilities Department said. The changes will be in place through February.

The concourse project involves renovating about 75,000 square feet of ground-floor area. Completion is scheduled next June.

These are the affected routes:

  • Access to John Sealy Annex from John Sealy Hospital will be through Café on the Court from 6:30 a.m.-11 p.m. daily. From 11 p.m.-6:30 a.m., pedestrians will need to go to the second floor of John Sealy Hospital and walk to the John Sealy Annex.
  • The route from John Sealy Hospital to the John Sealy Annex via the north-south hallway is closed. Pedestrians will need to use the bank of six elevators in the hospital and go to the second floor to access the other core buildings.
  • Access to the John Sealy Annex elevators from the loading dock at the north side of the hospital complex has been rerouted through the easternmost doors and through to the existing corridor. Signs are posted identifying the revised routing.

Here is a summary of existing changes, by building:

Clinical Sciences Building:

  • The west entrance has closed. The building’s elevators will be accessible from the upper floors, but not from the first-floor area near the closed west entrance.
  • Clinical Sciences elevators not serving the first-floor bed storage area will no longer travel to the first floor. They will continue to operate on the upper floors. They may be accessed on level 2 via the John W. McCullough Building elevators or the John Sealy Annex elevators.

John Sealy Annex:

  • The oxygen bottle storage area located outside on the loading dock of the John Sealy Annex (between Clinical Sciences and Research Building 6) will be relocated to the north loading dock of the John Sealy Annex North Addition.

John Sealy Hospital:

  • The eastern end of the “Main Street” corridor in John Sealy Hospital has closed.
  • The Main Street coffee shop is temporarily located in the nearby Café on the Court cafeteria.
  • The Main Street entrance to the gift shop also is closed. The gift shop will remain open, with access through the hospital lobby.
  • The hospital chapel has relocated to Room 1.136 in the John Sealy Annex (Old John Sealy Hospital). It is immediately north of the cafeteria and accessible by walking through the cafeteria to the Annex hallway.
  • The exterior doors exiting to the courtyard between John Sealy Hospital and Café on the Court are closed to pedestrian traffic due to construction on the building’s exterior in this area. The exits are designated for emergency use only.

McCullough Building:

  • Pedestrians on the first floor of the John W. McCullough Building will be unable to access the nearby UTMB Health Clinics, the Clinical Sciences Building or Research Building 6. Access will be available from McCullough’s upper floors.

Research Building 6:

  • The west entrance to Research Building 6, formerly Children’s Hospital, has reopened. The entrance closed several months ago while the building’s first floor underwent renovation and reconstruction.  The entrance will provide access to two building elevators and the new Student Testing Center, but it will not connect to John Sealy Hospital. Pedestrians will need to use the nearby temporary entrance to get inside John Sealy Hospital.

UHC:

  • The south-facing 9th Street entrance to the UHC, or UTMB Health Clinics, building has been closed. Pedestrians from the south need to follow an alternate second-floor route to the UHC that begins at the entrance to John Sealy Hospital. UHC’s north entrance remains open.
  • Staff/freight elevators in the UHC building will no longer travel to the first floor. They will continue to operate on all upper floors. UHC public elevators are not affected. Deliveries to UHC may be made using the McCullough elevators or the John Sealy Annex elevators to access level 2 and then travel to the UHC staff/freight elevators.
