The Diagnostic Center

Imagine practicing medicine with a virtual diagnosis expert by your side—one who helps you navigate more than 10,000 diagnostic tests and then interprets specimen and imaging results in the context of your patient's history.

The UTMB Diagnostic Center is dedicated to ensuring patients and providers receive an accurate diagnosis as quickly as possible with the fewest tests, enabling clinicians to deliver timely, effective care. We help providers interpret simple, complex or ambiguous laboratory results across a wide range of clinical areas within the context of their medical history. Our team of diagnosticians—supported by AI, scientific literature, and guided by physician oversight—delivers fast, patient-specific recommendations that can prevent unnecessary referrals and streamline patient management. When you send us a patient consultation request, we will review the patient’s history, lab findings, and potential next steps, giving you a clear path forward in managing or referring the patient.

Example scenarios

  • Unexplained Bleeding
    • Scenario: A patient presents with bleeding that doesn’t match any known disorder, leaving you to suspect a coagulation issue without a clear cause.
    • How the Diagnostic Center Helps: When you initiate a consultation, our Diagnostic Center doctors review the patient’s history, lab results, and clinical details to identify potential factors behind the bleeding. They then recommend additional tests or referrals as needed.
    • Outcome: You receive a concise interpretation that clarifies whether basic management is sufficient or if further investigations—or a hematology referral—should be pursued.
  • Possible Autoimmune Disorder
    • Scenario: A patient presents with diffuse joint pain, low-grade fevers, or a mild rash, prompting your suspicion of an autoimmune condition without definitive clues.
    • How the Diagnostic Center Helps: Our Diagnostic Center doctors review the patient’s presentation and lab results to assess for autoimmune disorders, highlighting areas that may require further testing.
    • Outcome: You receive a clear, actionable interpretation to help you decide whether to begin initial management, order additional tests, or refer the patient to rheumatology.
  • Suspected Anemia
    • Scenario: A patient’s labs show borderline anemia, and it’s unclear whether it’s due to early chronic disease, nutritional deficiency, or another subtle cause.
    • How the Diagnostic Center Helps: After placing a consultation, our Diagnostic Center doctors analyze the patient’s data to pinpoint likely causes and determine if further workup is warranted.
    • Outcome: You get a focused summary that guides you toward conservative monitoring, additional lab tests, or a hematology referral if the situation appears more serious.
