The Division of Surgical
Pathology with six attending general surgical pathologists and nine
subspecialty pathologists are unswervingly committed to provide the best
in clinical service, resident and fellow education as well as applied pathology research. Divisional accessions are over 16,000 annually
(approximately half biopsies and half surgical resection specimens) with
strong representation of breast, gastrointestinal, genito-urinary,
gynecologic, head and neck and pulmonary pathology. Our staff pathologists are committed to excellence in education for our fellows, residents and medical students, and as such provide a wide array of
conference opportunities including: Interesting Cases, Surgical
Unknowns, Gross Unknowns, Topics in Surgical Pathology and seven
interdepartmental tumor boards. Research efforts by the Faculty include
participation in activities of the Center for Biodefense and Emerging
Infectious Diseases, Institute of Human Infection and Immunity, and the
WHO Collaborating Center for Tropical Diseases. Located on Galveston
Island along the Texas Gulf Coast, the thriving UTMB campus is only
blocks from the beach, less than an hour from the Johnson Space Center,
the Clear Lake Recreational Area as well as the City of Houston.

Mission Statement
We are a nationally recognized Division in Surgical Pathology with
the fundamental responsibility to promote excellence in the practice of
Surgical Pathology by providing quality clinical diagnostic care for the
Surgical Divisions of UTMB, the University Health Clinics, as well as
numerous UTMB clinics across South and East Texas. Further, as part of a
large teaching hospital, it is also our duty to provide the necessary
educational experiences whereby to offer superior training for UTMB
Medical Students, Residents and Fellows.
Subspecialty Consultation Services
The Division welcomes subspecialty consultations related to biopsy
or surgical material across the disciplines of Breast Pathology,
Gastrointestinal Pathology, Gynecologic Pathology, Hematopathology,
Liver Pathology, Neuropathology, Pediatric Pathology and Renal
Pathology. Consultation material is promptly distributed to the
