CARES Act Emergency Financial Aid Grant to Students
UTMB has signed and returned the certification and agreement form for the Emergency Financial Aid Grant to Student under the CARES Act to the US Department of Education. UTMB has received an award of $1,101,752, of which $550,876 is mandated for emergency grants to students. The funds for emergency student grants were received on April 25,2020. UTMB intends to use this total amount for grants to students who have expenses related to the disruption of campus operation due to coronavirus as directed by the US Department of Education. At this time, UTMB is reviewing applications that have been received to determine eligibility for the awards, but has not made any awards. We intend to make awards within the next 30 days.
UTMB has 1776 students who are eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and are therefore eligible to receive an emergency financial grant. UTMB developed an application that students completed between April 15,2020 and April 21,2020. A committee consisting of one representative from each of the fours schools and four representatives from Enrollment Services will review the applications and amounts requested to determine which students meet the criteria prescribed by the US Department of Education. The maximum that could be awarded to student is $2500.
The funds awarded to students will be direct deposited to their bank accounts if they have direct deposit set up in mySTAR; otherwise, a check will be mailed to them. If a student intends to use their awards to pay tuition/fees, they will need to login to mySTAR to do so.
