May 11-15, 2026, UTMB celebrates National Health System Week and Nurses Week.

This year’s theme, Back to the Future: Honoring Our Past. Driving Our Future., reflects the legacy we share, the work happening today, and the future we are building together.

Whether you provide care in our hospitals, clinics, correctional managed care facilities, or support patients and teams behind the scenes, each of you brings heart, dedication, and commitment to our mission. Every role plays a part in shaping the future of our care and the experience we provide.

Your compassion, professionalism, and commitment to excellence are what make UTMB exceptional for our patients and their families. We simply couldn’t provide Best Care without you.

Throughout the week, teams across the health system will have opportunities to connect, have fun, and celebrate together. Participation is optional, flexible, and meant to be enjoyable, and teams are encouraged to join in however works best for them.

We hope you’re able to take part in the festivities happening across our four campuses or celebrate in your own way with your team. Wherever you are, please take a moment to reflect on the incredible role you play in our health system.

This year’s events are designed to reflect who we are as a health system, the legacy we carry forward, and the future we are building together.

UTMB Time Capsule Activity

We’re creating a time capsule to be opened during the UTMB 150th Anniversary in 2041. Participation Deadline: 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13th!

The Great Scott Book Swap

Each campus will host a Staff Book Swap during Health System and Nurses Week. Team members are invited to donate and exchange books and discover something new to read.

Breakroom and Doorway Decorating Contest

Winners announced! We are excited to bring back our Breakroom and Doorway Decorating Contest. This year’s theme, Back to the Future – Honoring Our Past. Driving Our Future.

Walk a Mile: Leadership on the Frontline

Executive leadership steps into the present by walking alongside our front-line teams—gaining insight, connection, and appreciation for the work that shapes our future.

Back to the Future: Virtual Steps Challenge

Celebrate Health System and Nurses Week by stepping through time! Join our “Back to the Future” virtual walking challenge and track your steps as we journey from the past to the future.

Daily Celebration Themes & Attire

Each day will feature a theme inspired by the past, present, and future. Teams are encouraged to participate as able.

	Monday, May 11: Team Day - Together Through Time We kick off the week by celebrating the power of teamwork—the constant that connects every era of healthcare. Across shifts, specialties, and decades, strong teams have always been the driving force behind exceptional patient care. Together, we’ve carried the mission forward through time—and together, we continue shaping what comes next. Dress Theme: Wear your favorite sports team gear (local or professional) and show your team spirit! Galveston Campus - Staff Appreciation Meal: Time: 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Location: Jennie Sealy Hospital, 4th Floor Corridor Jennie Sealy Hospital 10-Year Anniversary Celebration: Time: 5 to 6 p.m. Location: Galveston Campus - Jennie Sealy Hospital, Second Floor Lobby
	Tuesday, May 12: The Past - Built on Purpose We honor the roots of healthcare and nursing—the pioneers, traditions, and purpose that laid the foundation for everything we do today. From Florence Nightingale’s era to more recent decades, the lessons of the past continue to guide our values, practices, and commitment to those we serve. Dress Theme: Step back in time by dressing in attire from the 1960s, 70s, 80s, or 90s, or honor the legacy of nursing with attire inspired by Florence Nightingale’s era.
	Wednesday, May 13: The Present - Powered by Passion This day shines a light on the incredible work happening right here, right now. The passion, skill, and dedication you bring each day fuel patient care, innovation, and connection across UTMB. The present moment is where impact happens—and your work makes it extraordinary. Dress Theme: Wear UTMB colors (navy blue and burnt orange) as we celebrate the incredible work happening right here, right now. Angleton Danbury Campus - Staff Appreciation Meal: Time: 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Location: Angleton Danbury Hospital, Classroom 1.303 League City Campus - Staff Appreciation Meal: Time: 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Location: League City Hospital, Second Floor Corridor (Connecting Clinics and the Hospital)
	Thursday, May 14: The Future - Innovating with Purpose We look ahead to the future of healthcare—shaped by creativity, technology, and bold ideas. Innovation has always moved us forward, and the work happening today is building a smarter, more connected future for patients and teams alike. The future is bright, and it’s being created right now. Dress Theme: Go bold and forward-thinking with metallics, silver, chrome, neon colors, or futuristic attire. Clear Lake Campus - Staff Appreciation Meal: Time: 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Location: Clear Lake Hospital, Second Floor Conference Room (Near Café)
	Friday, May 15: Sealing Our Legacy - Stepping Into Our Future We wrap up the week by celebrating the journey—past achievements, present impact, and the future we are stepping into together. Every role, every step, and every contribution leaves a mark. The legacy of healthcare is not just behind us, it’s being built with every step forward. Dress Theme: Celebrate the journey with crazy/fun socks—because every step forward matters!
