Department of Dermatology

General Information

The Department of Dermatology was established at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in 1920. The objectives of the department are to provide excellent teaching for medical students, residents, and fellows in order to foster outstanding clinical care for Texas residents, model patient care, and the advancement of knowledge through scholarly activities.

The UTMB Dermatology Residency Program is fully accredited and includes six residency positions for each year of the three-year program. It is the oldest dermatology training program in Texas and has a long record of producing high-quality dermatologists. Completion of a PGY1 year as designated by the American Board of Dermatology is required before entering the residency program. The basic emphasis in our program is the development of a firm foundation for the practice of dermatology by learning to diagnose and treat skin diseases and cutaneous manifestations of systemic diseases. Participation in research is required to round out the learning process through our Dermatology Scholarly Project. We expect our graduating residents to be board certifiable, to be competitive candidates for fellowship or academic positions, and to be excellent clinicians.
