Research Interests

My research is focused on understanding pathogenic mechanisms of infectious disease using state-of-the-art mass spectrometry and imaging technologies.

Elucidating host-pathogen interactions at the cellular level is of vital importance for discovery and development of drugs for both host-directed and/or pathogen-based therapeutic approaches. Mass Spectrometry Imaging (MSI) is a label free technique that utilizes the sensitivity and selectivity of mass spectrometry to visualize the distribution of molecules in biological tissues at cellular detail. Using this approach analytes such as lipids (lipidomics), metabolites (metabolomics), and drugs can be identified and localized within target tissues and cells.

We are applying MSI-based lipidomic and metabolomic techniques to study the in-situ pathogenesis of many viral and bacterial infectious diseases including HIV, Tuberculosis, Cerebral Malaria, Meliodosis, and Pneumonic Plague.
