Dr. Selwyn O. Rogers, a surgeon and public health expert with credentials fom Harvard, Vanderbilt and Temple schools of medicine, is the new vice president and chief medical officer for the Health System at UTMB. Rogers also will serve as assistant dean for clinical affairs in the School of Medicine. He will assume his duties Dec. 1, 2014.

Rogers graduated magna cum laude from Harvard when he received his bachelor’s degree in biology. He earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He completed his surgical residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, including a research fellowship in surgical oncology and a clinical fellowship in surgical critical care. He also earned a master’s degree in public health from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
 
Rogers has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to teaching and patient care. He is the author of more than 82 peer reviewed articles.

UTMB School of Nursing Dean Pamela G. Watson hosted the 2014 Excellence in Nursing awards luncheon, presented by the Good Samaritan Foundation, in recognition of outstanding nurses in a number of categories.
During the last 60 years, the foundation has awarded more than $15 million to more than 15,000 nursing students in Texas.

This is the fourth consecutive year that UTMB’s nursing professionals have been recognized as leaders in education and care.

Many UTMB nurses were honored this year with bronze medal recognitions, while high honors went to Jamie Heffernan, Charles Machner and Linda Rounds.
 


Laura Leal Rosales joined the Employee Advisory Committee to fill a vacant position as an Academic Enterprise representative. She joined UTMB in August 2012 as the director of Sponsored Programs in Research Operations.

The EAC helps to improve communications among UTMB staff. The council, which is sponsored and endorsed by the Office of the President, works to promote a positive and collaborative work environment that is committed to assessing, prioritizing and communicating employee needs.

Katherine Becker, MHA, MBA, has been appointed Administrator for the School of Nursing. In her new role, Ms. Becker will assist with planning, forecasting and implementing all budgetary and operational matters for the School Of Nursing.

 Ms. Becker brings more than 24 years of experience in staff and management positions with academic health care institutions to her new position.

 Ms. Becker is a lifelong Galvestonian and is engaged in our community outside of UTMB. She is an adjunct professor at Galveston College with the Health Care Administration program, volunteers with the Galveston Historical Foundation and serves as a                 Volunteer Chairman for Dickens on the Strand and the Historical Homes Tour.
