Michael Scheer has accepted the position of vice president for finance in the Academic Enterprise, effective Oct. 13. Scheer is a Certified Public Accountant who has served as interim chief financial officer at UTMB since December 2013. In his new role, he will provide financial leadership to UTMB’s education, research and Faculty Group Practice enterprises.


Thanks to the hard work of the Women, Infants and Children team, UTMB has received the Texas Ten Step Star Achiever Award. The Texas Ten Step Star Achiever Award is a designation that recognizes hospitals that are implementing policies that are aligned with the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding and encourages continued progress toward pursuit of Baby-Friendly USA Hospital designation.


Director for Clinical Operations and Ob/Gyn Terri Gately accepted the award on behalf of Texas City PediatricsCJ9A Nurse Manager Dell Roach accepted the award for the CT/ Vascular Surgery UnitT/ Vascular Surgery J9A and Texas City Pediatrics are the newest Always Award winners. The Always Award recognizes units who always are attentive to our patients, always listen, always explain and always treat patients with the respect they deserve.

Inpatient Unit J9A was selected based on their patient satisfaction scores for “Doctors Always Communicated Well”, which rose from 80th percentile to 100th percentile over the quarter, and “Nurses Always Communicated Well,” which is currently at the 99th percentile.

Texas City Pediatrics was selected based on very high patient satisfaction scores for “Overall Doctor Rating”, at the 98th percentile, and “Office Staff Quality”, at 97th percentile.
